Hart of Wud, Heart of Stone

30 x 30'' Oil on hand stretched canvas, 1.5'' deep canvas, sides painted black.

This piece was inspired by the 1980 post-atomic war sci-fi novel Riddley Walker, my favorite book ever. It's not an easy read as you must linguistically learn how to read it while reading it, but a worthwhile one! What if power were something that brought us closer to nature and each other instead of something that we sought to control and conquer, thereby destroying both?

Hart as in heart, but also, hart as in a deer. There's a lot of double meanings in this book. This painting uses the heart-shaped wood piece I found that I also use in Wood vs Muscle, embedded in a heart of stone.
